Halloween is around the corner and the US has a new type of Vampire. Oxitec received state and federal approval in the US and released genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes in a pilot project for the Florida Keys through 2022. People who lived there did not agree to have the mosquitoes released.
Oxitec
Supposedly, Oxitec delivers “Friendly™” mosquito solutions to combat species that transmit deadly diseases around the world. The project employs Oxitec’s “Friendly” non-biting, self-limiting Aedes aegypti male’s mosquitoes. The males contain a self-limiting gene, the offspring they produce supposedly do not live to maturity, thus naturally suppressing the population. This was the first time that “Friendly” mosquitoes are released in the US.
From 2013 to 2015, millions of these genetically modified mosquitoes were released into neighborhoods in Jacobina, Brazil, in an effort to reduce the number of native disease-carrying mosquitoes. But unexpectedly, some of the gene-edited mosquitoes passed on their genes to the native insects, fueling concerns that they created a more robust hybrid species.
Independent Studies
It is very difficult to find any independent studies on the genetically modified mosquitoes and the EPA agency does not oversee any of Oxitec’s releases of mosquitoes in the US. There is also not any extensive research on how this will affect animals in the environment. People who have experience the mosquitoes, have stated very different things, to what is released by researchers from Oxitec.
Also, concerning is the knowledge that Oxitec’s genetically modified mosquitoes research is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It has been stated that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded the exaggerated COVID forecast model which was used as a rationale to justify lockdowns and is now known as science fraud. Due to the lack of independent research and suppression of information on the mosquitoes, this seems to be going in a similar direction.
